Toybox REVIEW: Transformers Age of the Primes Vortex

Transformers Age of the Primes Vortex 01

Release Date: April 2025
RRP: $24.99/£24.99

The time of Transformers Legacy is over, and thus begins the Age of the Primes! 2025 marks the beginning of an all-new Generations line celebrating the mythical Thirteen Primes, but that doesn't mean Hasbro aren't including other popular faces from across the Transformers multiverse in for good measure. Two new G1-styled combiner teams have been confirmed for the range, and whilst its first year is more preoccupied with the Aerialbots and Superion we also have a sneak peek of what's in store for year two with Age of the Primes Vortex! Following on from Menasor in the Legacy line and Devastator in Studio Series 86, the Combaticons and Bruticus will be the third Decepticon combiner to join this modern iteration of toys.

Toybox REVIEW: Transformers Studio Series 86 Bonecrusher

Transformers Studio Series 86 Bonecrusher 01

Release Date: March 2025
RRP: $24.99/£24.99

Although it’s taken a good few years into its existence for Hasbro to bring Devastator to the Studio Series 86 line, at the very least now that they are coming they’re doing it at rapid pace. So much so that we can expect to see all six Constructicons released before the year is out, with the second of the group coming in the form of Studio Series 86 Bonecrusher. Forming the left arm of Devastator in combined mode, Bonecrusher is the first of two (alongside Scavenger) Deluxe Class releases, with the legs (Scrapper and Mixmaster) as Voyagers whilst torso parts Hook and Long Haul are a Commander class two-pack.

Toybox REVIEW: Transformers Studio Series 86 Scrapper

Transformers Studio Series 86 Scrapper 01

Release Date: March 2025
RRP: $34.99/£34.99

While we’re now quite far out from the 35th anniversary of Transformers: The Movie it originally arrived to celebrate (so much so that we’re rapidly approaching its 40th anniversary), the Studio Series 86 line is still going strong! By this point most of the new characters that appeared in the film have been neatly covered off, but there’s still scope when it comes to the veteran Generation One characters. 2025 is poised to be a pretty big year for the line as it delves into its first combiner, the only one to appear in the film itself – Devastator! With the six Constructicons set to be released across five sets at varying price points, Studio Series 86 Scrapper neatly kicks things off with their de facto leader.

Toybox REVIEW: Transformers Studio Series 86 Galvatron

Transformers Studio Series 86 Galvatron 01

Release Date: January 2025
RRP: $54.99/£55.99

Even though the Studio Series 86 line is running out of core Transformers: The Movie characters to feature, there are still some characters that have not appeared in the line itself despite having a recent toy. One such example is Galvatron, who despite being synonymous with the movie has been overlooked by the line until now due to his War For Cybertron: Kingdom toy coming out around the time the line was starting. However Studio Series 86 Galvatron has finally arrived, and while it might not be a brand new figure (ala Ultra Magnus), it does however fill a void that Transformers fans have noted in Galvatron toys for decades.

Toybox REVIEW: Transformers Legacy Evolution Armada Universe Megatron

Transformers Legacy Armada Megatron 01

Release Date: June 2023
RRP: $54.99/£55.99

The Transformers Legacy line made quite the impact when it was revealed it would be featuring characters from across the franchise's 37-year history, and that doesn't look to be changing any time soon as the range moves into its second year with the Legacy Evolution line. After dipping its toes into Transformers: Armada with Starscream and Hot Shot, Hasbro are now moving onto to the big guns as both the Autobot and Decepticon leaders make their appearance. Transformers Legacy Evolution Armada Universe Megatron is an all-new mould and the first show-accurate remake the character has ever officially had, though he did receive a remoulded figure in 2015 as part of the Combiner Wars line.

Toybox REVIEW: Transformers Legacy Armada Universe Starscream

Transformers Legacy Armada Universe Starscream 01

Release Date: October 2022
RRP: $34.99/£32.99

After several years of War for Cybertron trilogy toys that were for the most part modern updates of the classic Generation One toys, the subsequent Legacy line is a breath of fresh air for fans of the wider Transformers universe. While this line continues to cover all those familiar G1 faces, it's also branched out into other areas of the franchise – including other cartoons and comic instalments. Among those is of course 2002's Transformers: Armada, and it didn't take long to get one of its most popular characters with Transformers Legacy Armada Universe Starscream. Unlike most versions of the treacherous Decepticon, this Starscream was fiercely loyal to Megatron only to have that loyalty rebuffed at every turn. After seeing how well Optimus Prime treated his team in comparison, Starscream briefly switched sides before returning to the Decepticon fold and eventually sacrificing his life so that Optimus and Megatron would join forces against Unicron.

Toybox REVIEW: Transformers Legacy Velocitron Speedia 500 Collection Robots in Disguise 2000 Universe Scourge

Transformers Legacy Velocitron RID Scourge 01

Release Date: August 2022
RRP: $55.99/£54.99

Transformers fans have developed the skills to immediately work out what figures are going to be retooled/repainted into what, so when it was announced that the Legacy line was going to be covering the various eras of the franchise AND that a new Generation 2 Laser Optimus Prime would be amongst the first selection of figures…it really didn't take long to work out what else would be coming eventually. As one of the most popular exports from the 2000 Robots in Disguise series (known as Car Robots over in Japan), Scourge is EXACTLY what most people from a Laser Prime mould. Fans didn't have to wait too long either, with Transformers Legacy Velocitron Speedia 500 Collection Robots in Disguise 2000 Universe Scourge arriving before the year was out. The Velocitron Speedia 500 Collection is a subset of Walmart-exclusive figures (also available via Hasbro Pulse), focusing on characters taking part in a race on the planet Velocitron from Transformers: Cybertron.

Toybox REVIEW: Transformers Studio Series 86 Decepticon Rumble (Blue)

Transformers Studio Series 86 Rumble 01

Release Date: November 2022
RRP: $11.99/£13.99

Everyone loves a big Transformers toy, but every now and again you've got to give the little guys some love as well. Thankfully this is exactly what the Studio Series 86 line has been doing lately, adding the Core Class to their range of screen-accurate figures from 1986's Transformers: The Movie. After getting off the ground with Wheelie and Spike in his exo suit, now Hasbro are giving the bad guys some love with Studio Series 86 Decepticon Rumble (Blue). A core character in the Generation One cartoon since its pilot, the wise-talking Rumble is one of Soundwave's trusted cassette minions.

Toybox REVIEW: Transformers x GI Joe Megatron H.I.S.S. Tank & Baroness

Transformers x GI Joe Megatron H.I.S.S. Tank & Baroness 01

Release Date: July 2022
RRP: $89.99/£89.99

Hasbro have been doing a lot of interesting Transformers Collaborative releases over the past few years – from the X-Men franchise to movies like Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, Jurassic Park and even Top Gun. However there's one collaborative effort that they had never delved into properly before, which is strange given that it's one that's right at home for them. Given the overwhelming popularity of both franchises as well as the number of crossovers they've had in comics and other expanded media, the combination of GI Joe and Transformers should be obvious. While there have been various event exclusives and odd releases that have crossed over the two, for some reason a fully functioning GI Joe or Cobra Transformers figure has never been a reality – until now. At long last, these two titans of Hasbro toys meet in the Transformers x GI Joe Megatron H.I.S.S. Tank and Baroness set – combining a new spin on the Deception leader with Cobra's first lady of terrorism.

Toybox REVIEW: Transformers Studio Series 86 Coronation Starscream

Transformers Studio Series 86 Coronation Starscream 01

Release Date: January 2022
RRP: $52.99/£55.99

Transformers: The Movie saw numerous fan favourites killed off in favour of brand-new characters that were about to hit toy shelves in 1986, but arguably some of them were able to get their most iconic moments in right before their deaths. The finally showdown between Optimus Prime and Megatron goes without saying, but there's also the untimely demise of Starscream – finally crowned as the Decepticons' new leader before being blasted to ashes by Galvatron. Decked out in full royal regalia, Starscream's new look has been fondly remembered by the franchise since, so shouldn't be any surprise to see Studio Series 86 Coronation Starscream as part of the film's 30th anniversary toy line. Although the anniversary may have been in 2021, as one of the first SS86 releases for 2022 Starscream shows that there's plenty of life in it yet, and Hasbro know it.

Toybox REVIEW: Transformers Generations Selects Cyclonus & Nightstick

Transformers Generations Selects Cyclonus & Nightstick 01

Release Date:
May 2022
RRP: $38.99/£44.99

Even as the Transformers toyline transitions from the War for Cybertron trilogy into the new Legacy line, the Generations Selects range still continues on strong. This unique little line has presented collectors with some of the more interesting corners from the franchise, ranging from obscurer characters to nostalgic repaints. Last year saw the release of Kingdom leader class Galvatron in his original G1 toy colours, and where the new Decepticon leader goes his loyal second in command isn't too far behind! Transformers Generations Selects Cyclonus & Nightstick pays homage to Cyclonus original 1986 toy, combining him with his Targetmaster partner to create a truly special release.

Toybox REVIEW: Transformers Generations Selects Galvatron

Transformers Generations Selects Galvatron 01

Release Date: September 2021
RRP: $58.99/£52.99

The Generations Selects line has proved an excellent means of getting some of the more interesting repaints and characters in the Transformers universe out to collectors, and avenues like Hasbro Pulse and the fan channel (particularly in places Pulse isn't available) are the perfect means of distributing them. 2021 saw Transformers fans FINALLY get a classic-styled Galvatron they can be proud of with the leader class Kingdom Galvatron, and with that figure being as good as it is why only stop at one? It didn't take long for Hasbro to announce that a Generations Selects Galvatron would soon be going into production, this time based on the grey and purple colour scheme of the original Generation One toy from 1986. Now fans of both cartoon and toy accuracy colouring can bask in what's been the best Galvatron figure in quite some time.

Toybox REVIEW: Transformers War for Cybertron: Kingdom Galvatron

Transformers Kingdom Galvatron 01

Release Date: June 2021
RRP: $49.99/£49.99

The fact that the Transformers War for Cybertron: Kingdom and Studio Series 86 lines have been so interchangeable for the most part has led to the cast of Transformers: The Movie getting filled out at a record speed - the perfect way to celebrate its 35th anniversary. However as fantastic as most of these new releases have been it's fair to say that many of these characters have already had great classic-inspired figures in the past, which makes the ones that haven't stand out all the more. Transformers War for Cybertron: Kingdom Leader Class Galvatron is one such example, with the new Decepticon leader and herald of Unicron finally making it to a price point worthy of his status. As well of course being a prominent character in Transformers: The Movie, Galvatron is also one of the select characters in the Kingdom line to be a key player in the Netflix Kingdom series - travelling back in time in attempt to defy Unicron and change Megatron's fate.

Toybox REVIEW: Transformers Studio Series 86 Scourge

Transformers Studio Series 86 Scourge 01

Release Date: December 2020
RRP: $29.99/£32.99

With Cyclonus already released as part of the Kingdom line and Galvatron soon to follow later in the year, the Studio Series 86 range is going to run out of key characters from Transformers the Movie to release if Hasbro aren't careful. Especially when it comes to the Decepticon side of things, since there were far fewer new Decepticons in the film than there were Autobots. The villains are also looking seriously outnumbered in the first wave of figures from the 35th anniversary celebratory line, with Studio Series 86 Scourge being the only Decepticon amongst a sea of Autobots. A herald of Unicron, "Scourge the tracker" commands the Sweeps - an army of huntsmen built in his image.

Toybox REVIEW: Transformers War for Cybertron: Kingdom Cyclonus

Transformers Kingdom Cyclonus 01

Release Date: December 2020
RRP: $29.99/£24.99

Previously Hasbro had carved out a fairly logical path with their current Transformers War for Cybertron trilogy toy lines. Siege depicted the battle between the Autobots and Decepticons on their home planet of Cybertron, whilst Earthrise saw them adopt new alt modes as their battle continued on a distant planet. But when it comes to Kingdom, the final instalment in the trilogy, the narrative seems a little less clear. Not only does it see the present day Transformers teaming up with their future Beast Wars descendants, but also incorporates elements from Transformers: The Movie. As such the Kingdom toy line includes a number of characters from the 86 movie, which is all the more confusing when the Studio Series 86 line is going on at the same time. One such figure is voyager class Cyclonus, Galavatron’s loyal subordinate and fellow herald of Unicron. Despite being released under the Kingdom banner, this feels like a Studio Series 86 figure in everything but name - and a perfect way to celebrate the film’s 35th anniversary.

Toybox REVIEW: Transformers Legends LG-23 Galvatron

Transformers toys are currently in a pretty good place. The success of the Combiner Wars line has been followed by the revival of another classic Generation One gimmick - the Headmaster. Here, each robots head is in fact itself a smaller robot (or Nebulon partner, depending on your choice of fiction) - acting as a pilot or gunner when the larger body is in its alt mode. Over in the West this line is known as Titan Return, with Hasbro reviving several classic Headmaster characters while reimagining others using the gimmick. Meanwhile in Japan new figures continue to be implemented into their Transformers Legends line, which also encompasses various figures from Hasbro's Generations line. The 23rd release in this line is the new Titan Master version of Galvatron, the reformatted version of Megatron who acted as Unicron's herald in Transformers: The Movie and the new Decepticon leader for the rest of the G1 cartoon. With the last G1 Galvatron figure being a poorly received deluxe in 2008, not only is a new figure long overdue but with 2016 marking the 30th anniversary of Transformers: The Movie it couldn't have come at a better time.

Custom Figure: Classics Bludgeon, Landmine (Lander) and Waverider (Diver)

A 3 figure G1 Pretender extravaganza of customs to show off this time round, with a custom Bludgeon made from a Cybertron deluxe class Unicron, and the first 2 of my big project to create classics versions of the whole cast of Masterforce (well, second and third if you want to be precise, since I did already do Blackzarak...)! Lander is made from a Movie scout class Hardtop and Diver is made from a Movie Scout class Storm Surge.

As before I'll give you an image of the original G1 figure first so you know what I was going for. Enjoy!

Custom Figure: Transformers Classics/Universe Blackzarak

Though not my first custom, here's the first one thats gonna go up on this blog! *applause*

Not alot done to this figure actually, I just took a Cybertron series Dark Scorponok (which I got damn cheap in TK Maxx last year)- which is already a blatent homage to this character, and got painted over the horrid sky blue plastic that was ruining the figure's deco. For the horns I took the figure's visor, cut it up and superglued the horns to the side of the head, then painted over them to match the helmet.

Just so you're in the know, Blackzarak was one of the big bad guys in the japanese exclusive Masteforce G1 series (the first pic). Then theres a pic of the unmodified Dark Scorponok...so you know what I had to begin with! And finally there's the finised product.

Toybox REVIEW: Transformers Animated Skywarp

"Skywarp wouldn't call himself a coward. He'd call himself smart. So what if he runs away from combat? Fighting is dangerous! All those missiles and lasers could really hurt someone! As a clone of Starscream, he's got all the power and skill of the leader of the Decepticon air forces, but none of the courage or ambition. He could easily be one of the most dangerous Decepticon of all time, but since he screams and runs away the second a shot is fired, he's mostly just a joke."

Here is my first toy review! Transformers Animated voyager class Skywarp! The most obvious place to start is that this figure is a repaint of the Starscream mould, so other than colour it bears no difference to the original figure whatsoever. But anyway, I'll take you through it as if this were brand new...

The figure transforms into a futuristic style jet, and the black and purple deco works very well. In fact, I'd say its even nicer than Starscream's. The toy also features two firing missiles that can be launched from underneath the jet.

The transformation from vehicle to robot is pretty simple, in fact most of it is done automatically! The first step is to bring the legs down (GERWALK MODE!!!! Lulz), which pushes in the nosecone. Next, bringing the torso into its frame and legs activates the figures automorph, and the arms move down and wings fold backward, leaving simple positioning of the arms left and folding back parts left. And there you have it! Robot mode Skywarp!

I wouldn't say the figure is hugely posable, but its good enough for me. The arms and legs each featuring hinge, swivel and ratchet joints. Bringing his null rays forward on his arms opens up two hidden panels (not quite sure what they are exactly for though!) and his thumb and figure sections are posable (one is loose on my figure though, grrr...). The figure looses points for having the same smirky face as Starscream did, instead of the face of a true coward, but to be honest its a minor nitpick I knew wasn't going to happen anyway.

I HIGHLY recommend this figure, but then I'm a huge fan of the Animated seeker mould. I vastly prefer it to the deluxe universe one (although I will admit that is half the price!). It might not be as appealing to you if you own the original Starscream figure, unless you want every clone you can get your hands on (I know I do!).

But you don't have to take my word for it of course. One picture can say more than I ever will, so here's 7!
