After dipping its toes into Transformers: Armada with Starscream   and Hot Shot , Hasbro are now moving onto to the big guns as both the Autobot and Decepticon leaders make their appearance. Transformers Legacy Evolution Armada Universe Megatron is an all-new mould and the first show-accurate remake the character has ever officially had, though he did receive a remoulded figure in 2015 as part of the Combiner Wars line.

Release Date: December 2020 RRP: $29.99 The Generations Selects line has become the perfect place to provide Transformers fans with all those obscure characters and old-school homages that the main lines can't accommodate, and when it comes to wacky colour schemes nothing beats the Generation 2 days. From 1992-1995  Transformers was home to the most outlandish colours you could see on a toy, and some of the catchiest adverts the franchise has ever had. While a lot of big name characters in the range were slight remoulds of their Generation 1 versions, the line still had plenty of interesting new releases too - with Megatron being one of the most notable. Gone was the silver Walther P-38 pistol, replaced with a giant gaudy green and purple tank that cried out "MEGATRON ATTACK" at the touch of a button. Promoting the Return of Convoy element of the franchise, Battlestars saw Optimus Prime resurrected once more as Star Convoy to battle the new Decepticon Emperor Dark Nova . However Dark Nova has his own resurrected champion in the form of Super Megatron , a reformatted Galvatron resurrected following his defeat and burial in ice during Transformers: Headmasters . Release Date: March 2017 RRP: 24,840 yen It’s been a long time since TakaraTomy released the original Transformers Masterpiece MP-05 Megatron  way back in 2007. In that time the line has gone through quite a few changes – a new scale, a closer adherence to cartoon accuracy and a dive into the worlds of Beast Wars and Japanese-exclusive G1 characters . With Optimus Prime having been redone in this new scale way back as MP-10 in 2011, it was high time that the leader of the Decepticons had the same treatment. There may have been a number of third-party “Masterpiece” style figures over the past few years – Xtransbots’ Apollyon, DX-9’s Mightron, Maketoys’ Despotron (all of which I won’t pretend to know anything about because I’m not a third-party person), but the MP-36 Megatron is the real deal. An official, cartoon-accurate, transforming G1 Megatron. That’s the stuff that dreams are made out of.

After the frankly superb Transformers: Animated, I was sceptical to see what the next iteration of the Transformers franchise would bring, especially since it was likely to have some sort of movie flavour to it (while I don't particularly oppose the live-action Transformers movies, I'd rather they keep apart from the series'). But despite being developed by first two movie screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, Transformers: Prime isn't quite as movie-influenced as one might expect it to be. Before I look at the story and characters of Prime, it's worth mentioning that this show really is a visual treat - I've not seen any CGI TV series like it before. The humans don't suffer from the "uncanny valley" factor of looking too realistic, but the metal finishes of the robots look amazing and the backdrops (both Earthly and alien) look superb. Even if the writing doesn't sell this show to you, it's worth the watch just for how damn goo...

As some of you may have realised by now, I've effectively given up collecting Transformers. This isn't because I've gone off them, just that the sheer amount of ones I wanted + constant price hikes + Hasbro UK being rubbish + interest in other better quality lines meant I had to sort out priorities a bit. With the release of Dark of the Moon though, I've bought my first Transformer in a year. And what better way to get back into things than with my favourite movie Transformer - the mighty Megatron. For the first time in the movieverse, Megatron has an Earth vehicle mode - more specifically a Mack Titan oil tanker truck (which is a nice foil to Prime's truck mode). The toy's vehicle mode is nicely detailed, being mostly made up of browns and greys. The cab windows are translucent red, which while probably not accurate I feel its a good look for the Decepticon leader. I just bought Transformers Dark of the Moon voyager class Megatron, and while I was taking the pictures for a future review (which will probably go up tomorrow, this weekend at the latest) I felt the need to recreate the scene in the movie where he shouts at some animals in Africa. Since I didn't have any elephants or zebras on hand, I thought these McDonalds Lion King 2 plushies would do. Enjoy!
