Over the last few years Chinese company Blokees have taken the toy collecting world by storm, wowing buyers with their range of affordable yet accurate articulated model kits and blind box figurines. The number of licenses they’ve gathered in this time is equally impressive, with the likes of Transformers, Pokemon, Marvel, Ultraman, Kamen Rider, various anime properties and more under their belt. But certainly among their most talked about properties is Neon Genesis Evangelion, with the company celebrating the series’ 30th anniversary with a new range of model kits in their Action Edition line. It’s a line I’ve had my eye on for some time, and with a lot of my Revoltech Evangelion collection now pushing 15 years old I was keen to update it with something a little more modern. Blokees Action Edition DX Evangelion Proto Type-00 is their rendition of Rei Ayanami’s Unit as it appears in the second Rebuild of Evangelion film – a snap together model kit suitable for builders of all ages and experience.
Blokees Action Edition Evangelion Proto Type-00 comes in an enormous box, the reason as to why is much clearer when you actually open it. The front of the box features a nice big image of the completed model in a dynamic pose, with all of the Blokees and Neon Genesis Evangelion branding framed around it. One side of the box simply features a side-on view of the model, whilst the other goes into more detail about some of the features/accessories it includes. This is continued on the back, which gives a full breakdown of all the parts included whilst also showing the completed model off in a number of poses. Open it up and you'll find a whopping 17 bags containing 33 different coloured runners and various other loose parts. However the size of the box (or at very least the thickness) is due to the effect part, which is kept in place on its own plastic tray.
The instructions are featured in a carefully laid out booklet, which breaks the process down into various body components – each detailing which parts are required for what. Rounding off the box contents is a collector card, featuring an image of the completed model in a dynamic running pose with foil lettering.
One of the main things the Blokees Action Edition line prides itself on is providing a straightforward and stress-free model kit build that doesn’t require any additional glue, painting or even tools – making it perfect for beginners and experienced builders alike. And credit where it is due, Blokees have delivered exactly that. The fact it doesn’t even require nippers (for the most part anyway) is perhaps what’s most impressive, with the pieces simply popping off their runners with a little bit of force and leaving next to no nub marks. That said it might be a little more noticeable on certain parts so nipping/sanding is still good practice, but overall the kit isn’t going to look any lesser if you don’t have the tools to hand. There are lots of pre-painted parts to cover all of the detailing, a couple of translucent plastic parts for the head and no stickers whatsoever. The instructions lay everything out nice and clearly with detailed pictorial steps, emphasising certain parts every so often to ensure the builder doesn’t get them mixed up with similarly shaped pieces. The finished product is a very anime-accurate Evangelion Unit 00 figure, based on how it appears in Evangelion 2.0. The completed model stands at around 6.7 inches tall, making it a little taller than similarly scaled model kits but it works for the Evas’ leaner build. The number of parts and colour separation the kit has makes for a really accurate look, and the translucent parts on the head really make the whole thing pop. Again there’s not even any need for any panel lining or anything here – the kit looks incredible just as a straight build.
The kit features an opening hatch at the back, which an entry plug can be inserted (or removed from). As the entry plugs are quite small/fragile, Blokees have kindly provided two in case of any accidental loss or breakage. Among the numerous accessories is also the units’ signature umbilical cable, allowing you to pose 00 either plugged in or running on its own (limited) power supply. The piece simply plugs into the back of the unit as it would onscreen, and then the cable itself features a flexible wire running through the inside so that it can be contorted/displayed as you choose.
Screen accuracy isn’t the only thing this kit manages to do on a budget either, with the articulation proving equally as impressive. Altogether Unit 00 features;
- Ball jointed head, neck, torso, waist, shoulder pylons and foot covers
- Double hinged elbows and knees
- Swivel hinge shoulders, wrists, hips and ankles
- Thigh swivels
- Single hinge toe sections
Overall it’s a pretty standard array of articulation across the body, but it’s the fluidity of the joints that really sells how poseable this kit can be. That said it isn’t perfect – the shoulder pylons are a little tricky to work with, as despite being separately articulated they still get in the way of the arm movement. It’s a quirk of the Evangelions design that Blokees’ haven’t been the only company to struggle with, and while rival versions have arguably done better in the past that isn’t to say Blokees have done a bad job here. There’s still plenty of movement you can get out of the arms, you just need to be wary of the pylons alongside them. The kit certainly makes up for it in other areas though, the limbs benefitting massively from those double hinge joints and the ball joints in the torso providing a great ab crunch. Between those and the ball joints in the head and neck you can get some great hunched over poses out of it. Being a model kit it’s a little less sturdy than a pre-built figure so things might pop off from time to time, but never does it feel like it’s about to break.
Perhaps what really sets this kit apart though is the sheer amount of accessories it comes with, providing Unit 00 with an impressive arsenal of weaponry as well as other fun bits and pieces. In addition to the aforementioned umbilical cable and entry plugs there’s also eight swappable hands, Pallet Rifle, N2 missile and even the Enchanted Shield of Virtue. The sizeable hand selection on offer here includes a variety of open/posed hands as well as a few accessory-specific pairs to hold both the shield and rifle. The hands are also made from a softer, more rubbery plastic which allows for easier insertion/removal from both the wrist joints and weapons. Each of the weapons requires building, with larger pieces like the missile and shield also having pre-painted markings on them for extra screen-accuracy. The Pallet Rifle might be much smaller, but even that looks great with its accurate moulding and coloured parts. The N2 missile, representing the climactic scene in Evangelion 2.0 where Rei sacrifices herself in the fight against the Tenth Angel, is almost as tall as the figure itself – making for a great display piece. But even that pales in comparison to the size of the Enchanted Shield of Virtue, which is not just as tall as Unit 00 but also considerably wider as well. Due to its size it’s a little heavy for the model to properly wield one-handed, but looks brilliant when held in both hands in a proper battle stance.
One of the most eye-catching accessories in the mix though is an absolute monster of an effect part – a giant blast deflection which clips onto the Enchanted Shield of Virtue to represent it resisting the Sixth Angel’s beam attack during Operation Yashima. The effect is made of soft translucent orange plastic and clips over the top of the shield – securely, but not so much that it can’t be easily removed. The size and weight of the part is genuinely incredible, especially when taking the kit’s already extremely reasonable price into account. While it does make the shield a lot heavier and thus more difficult to pose, it looks incredible and really makes a display look that much more dynamic. Be sure to display it from the side however, because the sheer size of it completely obscures both the shield and the Eva when viewed directly from the front.
Rounding off the accessories is a customisable display base, and once again it feels like Blokees have taken everything into account. The buildable display base can used either with the included clear plastic articulated arm as a standard base, or alongside additional pylon and baseplate pieces to turn it into the Unit’s launch platform. The platform features back pylons that the model can slot onto, as well as a port underneath that the other end of the umbilical cable can plug into (creating a direct link between the model and base for extra screen accuracy). In standard articulated stand configuration, two unpainted white damaged buildings have also been included that can be plugged into the base to turn it into a little scenario. Both options are great, but the inclusion of the launch platform parts is what really completes this set.
With Blokees Action Edition DX Evangelion Proto Type-00 in hand it’s not hard to see why there’s so much hype around Blokees at the moment. This is without a doubt the most stress-free model kit I’ve ever built, the end result being a highly detailed and screen-accurate figure that doesn’t even require tools for the most part, let alone additional painting or detailing. The level of articulation is easily on par with rival companies’ kits of this size, and the accessory count on par with action figures twice this price point. In terms of quality and value for money, Blokees easily comes out on top. This certainly won’t be the last time I visit their Neon Genesis Evangelion range, and I will be keeping a much closer eye on what else they have to offer as well.
