Toybox REVIEW: Blokees Action Edition Evangelion Production Model 02 (Upgraded Edition)

Image
Release Date: October 2025 RRP: $39.99 Blokees' Neon Genesis Evangelion range is among some of its most popular items, which is quite impressive for a company that has gathered so many licenses under its belt in a few short years. Their Action Edition model kit range has already covered all of the core Units from the Rebuild of Evangelion films, as well as some TV series editions and the pilots themselves over in their Fantastics Series  line. Blokees Action Editon Evangelion Production Model 02  is a particularly interesting release as there are now two variations on the market - a standard version which is available worldwide, and an upgraded edition with revised joints and extra accessories that's currently only available in China.

Toybox REVIEW: Blokees Action Edition Evangelion Proto Type-00

Image
Release Date: September 2025 RRP: $49.99 Over the last few years Chinese company Blokees have taken the toy collecting world by storm, wowing buyers with their range of affordable yet accurate articulated model kits and blind box figurines. The number of licenses they’ve gathered in this time is equally impressive, with the likes of Transformers , Pokemon , Marvel , Ultraman , Kamen Rider , various anime properties and more under their belt. But certainly among their most talked about properties is Neon Genesis Evangelion , with the company celebrating the series’ 30th anniversary with a new range of model kits in their Action Edition line. It’s a line I’ve had my eye on for some time, and with a lot of my Revoltech Evangelion collection now pushing 15 years old I was keen to update it with something a little more modern. Blokees Action Edition DX Evangelion Proto Type-00 is their rendition of Rei Ayanami ’s Unit as it appears in the second Rebuild of Evangelion film – a snap toge...

Toybox REVIEW: Shokugan Modeling Project Saintkaiser

Image
Release Date: November 2025 RRP: 10,000 yen True to any toy company that wants to make money, it didn't take Bandai long after the release of SMP Wolkaiser to follow it up with its obvious remould. Shokugan Modeling Project Sainkaiser  is the third release in the Mahou Sentai Magiranger  range - based on the movie-exclusive mecha from Mahou Sentai Magiranger the Movie: Bride of Infershia . After travelling to Infershia atop the Horned Sacred Horse Unigolon  in order to save his friend Yuka, Kai Ozu's   Magiphoenix form combines with the unicorn to form the Holy Majin and defeat Glúm do Bridon. This Premium Bandai exclusive set includes both Saint Magiphoenix and Unigolon, as well as the very first poseable Wolzard Fire  figure.

Toybox REVIEW: Shokugan Modeling Project Wolkaiser

Image
Release Date: September 2025 RRP: 8900 yen Mahou Sentai Magiranger was a series with a lot of interesting ideas, and one of the most interesting of all was Wolzard - the dark magic knight who was eventually revealed to be Isamu Ozu , the father of the five Magirangers who fell to darkness during his battle with the Absolute God N Ma . Repeatedly battling against the Magirangers across the course of the series, the family were eventually able to return their father to the light - making him of the first Super Sentai villains to become an "extra" ranger. His impact on the series makes Shokugan Modeling Project Wolkaiser the perfect choice to continue Bandai 's new range of Magiranger  model kits - neatly coinciding with the show's 20th anniversary. Featuring both Wolzard  and his horse Varikion , SMP Wolkaiser is a  Premium Bandai  exclusive and the second SMP release from Magiranger following on from Magiking .

Toybox REVIEW: Shokugan Modeling Project Magiking

Image
Release Date: June 2025 RRP: 8580 yen While there hasn’t been an obvious pattern as such to which Super Sentai mecha join the Shokugan Modeling Project line, Bandai certainly aren’t ones to pass up an anniversary tie-in. 2025 marks the 20th anniversary of Mahou Sentai Magiranger , so despite only being partway done with Seijuu Sentai Gingaman the model kit range has now jumped forwards a good few years with the release of Shokugan Modeling Project Magiking . A particularly interesting mecha due to its unique components and combination sequence, this general retail set offers fans a model kit that enjoys all the advancements in moulding, engineering and articulation that have come in the two decades since the series first debuted.

Toybox REVIEW: Shokugan Modeling Project BullTaurus & Galaxy Decisive Battle Set

Image
Release Date: December 2024 RRP: 8000 yen 2024 was the year Seijuu Sentai Gingaman stormed onto the Shokugan Modeling Project scene, and despite a brief stopover to round off the GoGoFive range with Victory Mars , Bandai made sure to return to the 22nd Super Sentai series to round off the year in suitable fashion. And of course the next obvious port of call is the show’s sixth (or extra depending if you’re going by Gokaiger categorisation) hero Black Knight – or more specifically the Shokugan Modeling Project Beast Combination BullTaurus & Galaxy Decisive Battle Set . This Premium Bandai exclusive release goes a little bit further than simply Black Knight’s Starbeast partner – covering off other aspects seen in both Gingaman and its follow-up crossover movie KyuuKyuu Sentai GoGoFive vs. Gingaman .

Toybox REVIEW: Shokugan Modeling Project Victory Mars

Image
Release Date: October 2024 RRP: 7200 yen While there are plenty of things to praise Bandai for when it comes to the Shokugan Modeling Project (formerly Super Mini-Pla ) line, one thing that should be commended is how thorough it is - particularly when it comes to the Super Sentai range. In the years since it began back in 2017 it's covered a number of different series, and nearly every time it's done the complete mecha line-up. Some things do occasionally fall through the cracks though, and in the last few years it does feel like there's been effort to fix that. First the Kakuranger line finally got its Ninjaman after five years in 2023, and now it's KyuuKyuu Sentai GoGoFive 's turn with the release of Shokugan Modeling Project Victory Mars . Last seen with the release of Black Max Victory Robo back at the end of 2020, Victory Mars has been LONG overdue. Comprised of five Mars Machines built for deep space rescue missions, the final mecha in the GoGoFive arsenal...

Toybox REVIEW: Shokugan Modeling Project GingaiOh

Image
Release Date: June 2024 RRP: 6800 yen It's always exciting when the Shokugan Modeling Project branches into a new Super Sentai series and it seems Bandai are keen to stay in the 90s for the time being, with 2024 being the year of Seijuu Sentai Gingaman ! Although the item in question may be the only confirmed release for this year from the 22nd Super Sentai series, Bandai have been quite the tease and shown off that there's plenty more to come. Kicking things off at the very beginning and with the core robot of the series, Shokugan Modeling Project GingaiOh is a retail release that immediately displays how this beloved model kit line continues to evolve.

Toybox REVIEW: Shokugan Modeling Project Tetra Boy

Image
Release Date: April 2024 RRP: 5500 yen A sure sign that a toy line is doing well is if they revisit things previously covered years before in order to plug any gaps they might have missed first time around. This is definitely something Bandai have had in mind with the Shokugan Modeling Project line - first revisiting Ninja Sentai Kakuranger last year to give fans Ninjaman and now also returning to Chōjin Sentai Jetman to give us the last of its mecha as well. Shokugan Modeling Project Tetra Boy is a Premium Bandai exclusive release, finally giving Jet Icarus and Jet Garuda  in the form of the AI-powered robot with kickboxing skills and the abilities to turn into the formidable Tetra Buster .

Toybox REVIEW: Shokugan Modeling Project GaoGod

Image
Release Date: September 2022 RRP: 7000 yen True to their word, Bandai went all out to complete the in-show line-up of Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger Power Animals in the SMP line. The final release in the range was something familiar but at the same time different – Shokugan Modeling Project GaoGod ! This Premium Bandai exclusive release is a remould of GaoKing – its components the five God Power Animals, the ancestors of the Gaorangers' own totem Power Animals.

Toybox REVIEW: Shokugan Modeling Project GaoLion & GaoElephant

Image
Release Date: July 2022 RRP: 6364 yen If the Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger range is anything to go by, when  Bandai properly hit the 2000s era of Super Sentai in the Shokugan Modeling Project they really will cover all the bases when it comes to core and auxiliary mecha. 2022 proved to be another glorious year for the 25th Sentai team with a number of retail and Premium Bandai exclusive releases from the series, including the Shokugan Modeling Project GaoLion & GaoElephant set. This Premium Bandai set contains no ordinary GaoLion however, but rather the enlarged version that can combine with GaoElephant, GaoShark, GaoTiger and GaoFalcon to form the mighty GaoKentaurus .

Toybox REVIEW: Shokugan Modeling Project Won Tiger

Image
Release Date: December 2023 RRP: 6500 yen Bandai continue their dive into 1993 and Gosei Sentai Dairanger with the release of Shokugan Modeling Project Won Tiger ! Perhaps better known in many parts of the world as the White Tigerzord from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers , this feels like a particularly notable release for the line given the popularity of both Kiba Ranger and the White Ranger . Which perhaps makes it rather odd that it comes as a Premium Bandai exclusive release, but when have Bandai ever truly made sense? Created as the sixth Mythical Qi Beast using the powers of both the Great Cosmos and the Dairangers, it then became the personal Qi Beast of Kou as he joined the team as Kiba Ranger.

Toybox REVIEW: Shokugan Modeling Project Dairenoh

Image
Release Date: August 2023 RRP: 7920 yen After a rather expansive run with their Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger assortment, Bandai move back to the 90s for another fan-favourite Super Sentai series in the Shokugan Modeling Project line. This time we're journeying back to 1993 with Gosei Sentai Dairanger - the 17th entry in the franchise and the basis for the mecha (as well as the White Ranger) in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers ' second season. Though a much smaller selection of mecha compared to Gaoranger , Dairanger 's Mythical Qi Beasts continue to be among one of the most popular mecha designs in Super Sentai and a highlight of the amazing streak the franchise had in the 90s. Naturally the first release in the assortment is Shokugan Modeling Project Dairenoh , the core robot from the series. In Power Rangers this appeared as the  Thunder Megazord following the destruction of the original dino Megazord.

Toybox REVIEW: Shokugan Modeling Project GaoHunter

Image
Release Date: January 2022 RRP: 5610 yen While the line moves on to Gosei Sentai Dairanger and filling some of the other gaps it missed over the years, I'm slowly clearing my model kit backlog but continuing on with the Shokugan Modeling Project Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger releases. After impressing in 2021 with GaoKing and GaoMuscle releases, Bandai 's premium mecha candy toy line continued to celebrate the 25th Super Sentai series in 2022 – releasing all of the mecha that appeared onscreen. The year kicked off with Shokugan Modeling Project GaoHunter – the line's second retail release for Gaoranger and the personal mecha of its sixth ranger, GaoSilver .

Toybox REVIEW: Shokugan Modeling Project Daidenjin

Image
Release Date: December 2022 RRP: 6600 yen One of the great joys about the Shokugan Modeling Project  (the line formerly known as Super Mini-Pla ) is that it's producing it's fair share of classic Super Sentai mecha in addition to just the post- Zyuranger ones that most of the world is more familiar with. For example, immediately after going all-out with Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger it jumped a further 21 years back in time to visit a different landmark Sentai series - 1980's Denshi Sentai Denjiman . The fourth instalment in the franchise, this was the second to be co-produced with Marvel Comics and the only series to receive a direct sequel in the form of the succeeding show Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan . Shokugan Modeling Project Daidenjin is the first of two SMP releases from Denjiman , the second Super Sentai  series its covered since its rebranding.

Toybox REVIEW: Shokugan Modeling Project GaoMuscle

Image
Release Date: September 2021  RRP: 8250 yen  When Bandai announced that they would be rebranding their Super Mini-Pla line as Shokugan Modeling Project , they also revealed that this new chapter in the line would be kicking off with Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger – easily the most ambitious Super Sentai series the line has tackled yet. With multiple combinations spread across numerous Power Animals, there was no way collectors were going to accept half measures with this – and Bandai didn't take long to show their dedication. Hot on the heels of SMP Gaoking 's release came the range's first Premium Bandai exclusive release – Shokugan Modeling Project GaoMuscle , the second of Gaoranger 's long line of mecha. In addition to GaoGorilla, GaoBear and GaoPolar, this set also includes GaoRhinos and GaoMadillo – also giving fans the option to build the GaoMuscle Striker combination.

Toybox REVIEW: Shokugan Modeling Project GaoKing

Image
Release Date: July 2021 RRP: 5445 yen Super Mini-Pla is no more, but from the ashes a far more powerful  candy toy model kit line has emerged - the Shokugan Modeling Project ! As exciting as that sounds the reality of it all is far less dramatic, with Bandai simply having rebranded the line to this new name that cleverly keeps the SMP initials. Given how  Super Sentai robots have been such a big part of the Super Mini-Pla line's identity, it makes sense that this relaunch kicks off with a new instalment from the long-running franchise. Following on from releases from 1984's Choudenshi Bioman we're jumping forward 17 years to Super Sentai's  25th anniversary series - Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger ! This series was notable for featuring a huge number of Power Animals for fans to collect, and Bandai have taken note of this and pledged to release them all in SMP form. Here we start at the very beginning though with Shokugan Modeling Project GaoKing - the core ...

Toybox REVIEW: Super Mini-Pla Balzion

Image
Release Date: April 2021 RRP: 5500 yen For the most part the Super Mini-Pla range has done a good job of covering the various mecha from each Super Sentai series, but when it comes to some of the older series there are a lot less options to choose from. In some cases (such as Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan for example) you might even only get the main mecha and its giant carrier vehicle. However for the Choudenshi Bioman range Bandai really went the extra mile, and on top of those releases also produced something that was LONG overdue a new toy. The mecha of the Anti-Bio Union piloted by their robotic assassin Bio Hunter Silva , Balzion is a villainous counterpart to Bio Robo that appears in the final three episodes of the series. Having received no toys when Bioman was airing back in 1984 and since then only a giant vinyl figure in 2017, the Premium Bandai exclusive Super Mini-Pla Balzion is a truly exceptional release.

Toybox REVIEW: Super Mini-Pla Bio Robo

Image
Release Date: February 2021 RRP: 5500 yen One benefit of Bandai’s Super Mini-Pla model kit line has been to create new versions of iconic Super Sentai mecha with modern articulation, but another one has simply been a shot at getting affordable versions of these classic designs to begin with. Something like a DX Bio Robo will run you hundreds on the aftermarket, but now you can own one at a fraction of the price with the Super Mini-Pla Bio Robo set. The mecha from 1984’s Choudenshi Bioman is the latest Super Sentai to receive the premium model kit treatment, with its individual components Bio Jet 1 and Bio Jet 2 able to transform and combine into the mighty bio particle-powered robot.

Toybox REVIEW: Super Mini-Pla Sun Vulcan Robo

Image
Release Date: February 2020 RRP: 5720 yen 1981’s Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan is notable for a number of different reasons. It is currently the only Super Sentai series to be a direct sequel to its predecessor, as well as the only team to be entirely comprised of men. But from a merchandise perspective it also added a significant staple to the franchise - a combining robot. Mecha had been a part of Sentai since Battle Fever J , but it wasn’t until Sun Vulcan that they were made of multiple vehicle components. Now Sun Vulcan Robo , the first combining Super Sentai robot, has joined Bandai’s Super Mini-Pla range - the model kit line that’s quickly become home to updates of these classic mecha. Though Sun Vulcan Robo was the only general retail item from the series it certainly didn’t come alone, with both the giant Jaguar Vulcan carrier and SODO versions of the team joining it as Premium Bandai exclusive items.
