Toybox REVIEW: Doctor Who Dalek Collector Set #2 (Dalek Invasion of Earth)

Dalek Collector Set #2 - Dalek Invasion of Earth

In the late 80s through to the 90s and early 00s, Doctor Who toys were produced by a company by the name of Dapol. They drew criticism for some easily avoidable inaccuracies (a six-sided TARDIS console, two-handed Davros and green K-9 - although the latter two were fixed in later rereleases), but released the widest spectrum of Who figures until Character Options took over with the relaunch of the series. One thing Dapol were particularly good at was milking their Dalek mould - in addition to the usual colour schemes they produced red, green, blue and even glittery versions over the years. Imagination certainly wasn't something they were short of.

This short history seems especially appropriate when talking about the second of Character's new range of Toys R Us exclusive 3.75" Dalek Collector sets, as it's the first the company have produced where they show a similar amount of imagination. Admittedly it has a bit more sense to it than Dapol's - taking inspiration from the iconic 1964 story The Dalek Invasion of Earth, but it's still very excited territory for them.

Custom Figure: 1965 Dalek Supreme

1965 Dalek Supreme 01

Its been a little while since I last painted a custom Dalek, but after receiving a second Classic Dalek set 2 for Christmas I found myself with three new Daleks ready for new paint jobs. The first was a pretty simple, but very effective job - the Dalek Supreme from 1965, appearing in both The Chase and The Daleks' Master Plan.

This custom was made from an Evil of the Daleks Emperor Guard Dalek, with the skirt section and eye piece painted with Citadel Chaos black. Like I say - not really a lot done to it, but not a variant Character Options will probably release any time soon.

Stay tuned for more Dalek customs soon, including a particularly big project that will please fans of Big Finish's audio adventures!

Toybox REVIEW: Doctor Who New Paradigm Supreme, Eternal and Scientist Daleks

The Drone and Strategist each got their own review, but with the release of the Dalek Supreme, Eternal and Scientist happening at once (in a Dalek-only wave nonetheless) it's time to wrap up the Dalek Paradigm review in one more post. There's not a lot left to say about the figure itself, so I'll let the pictures do the talking. What I DO have to say though is that despite my reservations about the new Dalek design and claims that it was missing something both on screen and in toy form, bringing them together is what truly makes them shine. I'm guessing this is what the designers were going for when presenting them in a myriad of colours, but having a complete collection in this case really pays off. The Daleks have officially been brought into 2010, and I can't wait to see these Daleks in action in the future. Victory of the Daleks was just a teaser, I'm ready for the main event.

Oh, and about this being a wrap up? Scrap that, expect to see the stone Dalek on here sooner or later.
