Toybox REVIEW: S.H. Figuarts Kaiser Belial

S.H. Figuarts Kaiser Belial 01

Release Date: June 2026
RRP: 13,200 yen

With Ultraman celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2026, Bandai Tamashii Nations have been pulling from all corners of the franchise for this year’s S.H. Figuarts offerings. As well as reissues and brand-new releases from the Showa, Heisei and New Generation eras, some of the more interesting choices have come from movies – the likes of Ultraman Saga, Hyper Zetton and Ultraman Zearth immediately springing to mind. Continuing this foray into Ultraman’s cinematic history is another dive into the saga of Ultraman Zero, or more specifically 2010’s Ultraman Zero: The Revenge of Belial with the release of S.H. Figuarts Kaiser Belial. Based on his revised appearance as head of the Belial Galactic Empire, this Tamashii Web exclusive release is Figuarts’ latest rendition of the corrupted Ultra and one of the franchise’s most popular modern recurring villains.

Kaiser Belial’s packaging is slightly unusual in that it’s longer than average, making it look more like the kind of box you’d see a kaiju in rather than an Ultra. As is usual for web exclusives it’s a windowless box with a large image of the Kaiser Belial suit dominating the front, with a more transparent image of the figure placed just behind it. The box adopts a dark red and black colour scheme which nicely matches Belial’s design. One side of the box is mostly blank other than the character name and S.H. Figuarts logo in the corners, whilst the other features the usual bookend style image. On the back you’ll find three images showing the figure off in various poses, and then inside the contents are spread across two trays – one for the figure and main accessories, and a smaller one for the alternate hands. Due to the size of the figure, Belial himself is stored lengthways in the tray rather than upright.

As previously mentioned in The Revenge of Belial Ultraman Belial returns having formed the Galactic Belial Empire, scarred from his previous battle with Zero and wearing the "Belial Mantle" - an ornate yet twisted version of the Ultra Brothers' own mantles. These are also the key differences with the Kaiser Belial figure, which is otherwise the same mould as the S.H. Figuarts Ultraman Belial figure released back in 2018 (and subsequently reissued in 2024 as a "Darkness Heels Ver."). The new head sculpt sports darker translucent orange eyes as well as that deep scar running down the right side of his face - carved directly into the sculpt and then painted with a gorgeous metallic orange that really stands out against the metallic black. The big draw here though is the Belial Mantle, which has to be up there as one of the most elaborate cloaks Bandai have ever put out in the S.H. Figuarts line. The large collar section is all soft plastic, the red and black colouring perfectly replicated and the moulded detail mirroring the materials used on the actual costume. Adorning it are eight colour timer-like orbs down the lapels, each moulded in translucent orange plastic. The cloak itself is made up of three parts- two draping down over the front and then a larger section at the back. All three are made from soft goods, with the material pleated to match its onscreen appearance as closely as possible. Then on top of that each section is of course wired as well, giving you full control over how it looks. It's just as hefty as it looks, but surprisingly each to balance - even if you can't manage it with the feet alone parts of the mantle can also be used for support if needed. Attaching and removing the mantle simply requires pulling off Belial's head (the simple peg joint in the neck makes this really easy) and then pulling it on and off. While the mantle doesn't properly affix to the figure, it's a snug fit so there's no risk of it rattling about whilst worn. Belial was a great looking figure to begin with, but this really gives him some display presence.

Other than the new scarred head sculpt the figure appears to be virtually identical to the Darkness Heels Ver., however it does have some slightly deco changes from the original 2018 release. Kaiser Belial sports a much brighter shade of red on his body than the original, which also has a matte finish than a glossy one. The rim of the colour timer has also been slightly altered, now a darker gunmetal grey whereas the original was more silvery. Those minor differences aside though it’s exactly the same figure, the new head sculpt and mantle firmly establishing Kaiser Belial specifically as how he appeared in Revenge of Belial while the original/Darkness Heels versions are more general appearances based on Mega Monster Battle: Ultra Galaxy Legends the Movie and Ultraman Geed.

Being the same sculpt also means that the articulation is also identical to that of the previous releases, following the same scheme that the Ultraman range has largely kept to since it first joined S.H. Figuarts. If you aren’t familiar with previous versions of the figure, this consists of;
- Ball jointed head, neck, torso, waist and wrists
- Swivel hinge shoulders, hips and ankles
- Double hinge elbows and knees
- Single hinge jaw and toe sections
- Thigh swivel
The hinged jaw is an extra feature exclusive to Belial, and whilst it doesn’t have a great deal of movement it is enough to show off the row of sculpted teeth hidden inside. Belial also uses a stockier, more muscular build than the majority of Ultras, and although it doesn’t really affect poseability for the most part it does emphasise how in an ideal world all Ultraman Figuarts would have bicep swivels. It wouldn’t break up the sculpt anywhere near as much Bandai seem to think it would, and the thicker arms may using the little bit of swivel the elbows have much harder to use for the beam pose than it is on smaller frame Ultras. That aside though the articulation is still very good for an eight-year-old figure, and together with the wired mantle you can get some really menacing and elaborate-looking poses out of the figure with minimal effort.

Kaiser Belial’s accessories are mostly an amalgamation of the ones included with the previous versions, albeit with a few slight additions and/or deco changes. Altogether there are four additional pairs of hands, a Deathium Beam effect part and the Giga Battlenizer with both long and short pole pieces. The hand selection include closed fists, gripping hands for the Giga Battlenizer and then two new pairs of open/posed hands that have the elongated red claws – a feature exclusive to his Kaiser Belial form. As the default open hands attached to the figure lack the claws, you have the option of displaying him with or without them. The Deathium Beam is virtually identical to the one included with the Darkness Heels version, however the hand its attached to now also has the claws. Similarly the Giga Battlenizer is nearly the same as the ones previously included with the original Belial release and Belial Atrocious, however the vent-like squares on each end are now red rather than blue. The inclusion of the Giga Battlenizer actually comes as a bit of a surprise, because although it may be Belial’s signature weapon he doesn’t have it in The Revenge of Belial – meaning the figure’s accessories actually stretch beyond the movie itself. As such it’s a shame that Bandai weren’t generous enough to include an alternate non-scarred head sculpt as well, because if they had this would have been the definitive Belial release. There aren’t any significant new pieces included here (though one could argue that the mantle more than qualifies as a significant “new” accessory), but what is here encompasses all of Belial’s key weapons and abilities – something previous versions have seemingly gone out of their way to avoid.

Even if (like me) you're someone who's picked up one of the previous releases of the character, S.H. Figuarts Kaiser Belial is another example of Bandai taking a great figure and making it even better. While very much a variant it's also the most comprehensive Belial release in the line yet, featuring elements from across the character's appearances on top of that striking new head sculpt and extravagant mantle. In a perfect world it would have been great to get a normal head as well, but honestly he looks so much better with the scar that it's more of a shame that he didn't retain it in later appearances onscreen as well. Yes it's the most expensive Belial in the line, but it's also by far and away the best one.
