Special REVIEW: Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger IN SPACE

Image
Between both  Donbrothers and Kyoryuger it's fair to say that Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger has proven itself to be quite flexible when it comes to crossovers. The 47th Super Sentai series was also quite large when it came to scope too, given both its time skip and the intergalactic elements it incorporated into the story following that. As such the Toei Tokusatsu Fan Club 's latest special is the perfect match, bringing all these elements together in the rather aptly named Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger IN SPACE . This short one-off special reunites characters from King-Ohger and Kyoryuger for a third time, as well as bringing in familiar faces from Ohranger , Gingaman ,  Dekaranger and Kyuranger .

Toybox REVIEW: S.H. Figuarts -Shinkocchou Seihou- Kyoryu Red

Image
Release Date: May 2024 RRP: 9900 yen As if releases from series of the past three years wasn't enough confirmation that Super Sentai S.H. Figuarts truly are back, there's now also the fact that S.H. Figuarts -Shinkocchou Seihou- Gokai Red wasn't just a one-off. While the idea of getting full teams from Bandai Tamashii Nations once again still feels like a pipedream, a second entry in this prestigious line is definitely something to be excited about. This time around Bandai are being a little timelier with their celebrations, marking the tenth anniversary of Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger with the (general retail) release of S.H. Figuarts -Shinkocchou Seihou- Kyoryu Red !

Movie REVIEW: Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger vs Kyoryuger

Image
In 2013 Super Sentai revisited dinosaurs for a third time, and the result remains one of the most popular instalments in the franchise to this day. Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger was a massive hit, to the point where South Korea even produced its own non-canon spin-off/sequel (which was in turn dubbed in Japan). As such there was no way its tenth anniversary was going to go uncelebrated, and in true Kyoryuger style a reunion movie simply wasn't going to be enough. Instead Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger hosted a two-part crossover, where the stories of the two series were intertwined in a way rarely seen in Super Sentai.  Again that wasn't enough though, and so their story continues into Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger vs Kyoryuger . The film was released in early 2024 as a special King-Ohger VS Series double-bill alongside Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger vs Donbrothers .

Series REVIEW: Power Rangers Dino Force Brave

Image
When an image of the Kyoryugers in slightly altered suits turned up online last year no one quite knew what it was. Some thought V-cinema, others thought it might be part of the next Super Hero Taisen release and some simply brushed it off as a high quality cosplay shoot. What no one expected though was it to be a sequel the 37th Super Sentai series, spurred on by the success of Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger in South Korea (where it was released as Power Rangers Dino Force ). Produced by Sentai ’s Korean distributor Daewon Media  (who despite the Power Rangers banner have no affiliation with Saban) and filmed in collaboration with Toei , Power Rangers Dino Force Brave is a 12-episode series featuring an all-new cast and modified mecha designs. The series was also released in Japan under the name Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger Brave , with Shigeru Chiba, Toshiyuki Morikawa, Haruka Tomatsu and Ai Orikasa returning to reprise their roles as the narrator, Torin, Canderrilla and Luckyul...

Movie REVIEW: Ressha Sentai ToQger vs Kyoryuger

Image
The beginning of a new year - and arguably the most important time for the Super Sentai franchise. A years' worth of adventures for one team reaches it's explosive conclusion while a brand new ones' begin (along with all the wonderful new toys that come with it). But before either of those happen, it's time for the annual versus series team up movie.  Ressha Sentai ToQger vs. Kyoryuger sees the cast of Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger return for one last roar, teaming up with the ToQgers against a rather large story thread left hanging from their own show.

Movie REVIEW: Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger Returns - 100 Years After

Image
Once upon a time Super Sentai 'Returns' movies weren't a lot to get excited about. Sure they were a chance to see your favourite heroes once again prior to the annual versus movie, but story wise they were bits of fluff that didn't really offer very much at all. Then last year Go-Busters vs. Go-Busters   came about and changed that by being a genuinely fantastic movie. And this year, Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger Returns: 100 Years After looks to do the same, featuring the kind of plot that even non-fans of the series can't help but get a little interested/excited about.

Toybox REVIEW: S.H. Figuarts Kyoryu Gold

Image
Once upon S.H. Figuarts buyers felt confident that if one group of Super Sentai characters (other than the Reds of course) was safe from Tamashii web exclusive  status, it was the sixths. After the mass releases of Shinken Gold , Gokai Silver and Dragon Ranger , they seemed pretty safe. However that certainty has been dashed over the past few months, with not only Kiba Ranger getting the TWE treatment but also the sixth ranger of the latest Sentai show. The third Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger release in the line, Kyoryu Gold  follows on from the Blue/Green 2-pack and comes just before the Black/Pink set - making it (currently) the only single figure web exclusive release for the show.

Movie REVIEW: Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger vs. Go-Busters

Image
With Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger having just drawn to a close, it was only a natural that the annual Super Sentai  vs. movie would accompany it. However with Kyoryuger being the third dinosaur themed Sentai, Toei  decided to do something special for this year's. Fully titled Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger vs. Go-Busters: The Great Dinosaur Battle! Farewell Our Eternal Friends , the movie brings back previous teams Zyuranger and Abaranger for an all-dinosaur themed rumble. But when this news broke, there was one question on most people's lips - where exactly did this leave the non-dino themed but part of the movie Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters ?

Series REVIEW: Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger

Image
It feels like only yesterday that I was saying goodbye to Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters and summing up my feeling of the show right here on this blog. However quicker than you know an entire year has gone past and here I am reviewing Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger  - the succeeding Super Sentai series and 37th in the franchise overall. After the (in my opinion of course) sorely underrated Go-Busters  went down as the least successful entry in the franchise yet, Toei had no choice but to opt for a back to basics approach. And judging by the toy sales, returning to the ever popular dinosaur motif was the right way to go...

Toybox REVIEW: Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger Minipla Bragigas

Image
As the Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger toy line draws to a close it’s time to take a look at the last entry into 2013’s range of Super Sentai minipla. Taking up this entire wave is the tenth Zyudenryu – the titanic Bragigas, partner to Kyoryu Silver and the team’s mentor Torin. Bragigas is special in that he doesn’t only represent the final Zyudenryu to appear in the series, but also features fossilised parts representing the Guardians that fell in battle against the Great Land Devil Gadoma. Bragigas is made up of three separate boxes, each also containing a single piece of that delicious soda flavoured candy.  Also, like Pteragordon and Plezuon, following the instructions will result in a built Bragi-Oh and so the boxes label the parts as such. The first box contains the robot’s torso, the second has the arms and axe while the third and final box contains the legs and two additional pieces. (From this point on all images will be of a painted kit, so if you would like to s...

Movie REVIEW: Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger: Gaburincho of Music

Image
It feels a little bit odd to be reviewing a Super Sentai summer movie before its respective series is over and done with, but rather than wait until early February when Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger finally draws to a close I've decided to start doing separate reviews for both Sentai and Rider movies. The Kyoryuger movie has felt like a rather special one since early information and teasers reared their head, not only promising a new evil ranger alongside the obligatory movie-exclusive mecha but also being billed as a musical. Now while Kyoryuger undoubtedly has a musical theme, it isn't the most prominent of things so seeing how it would be handled was very exciting indeed. Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger: Gaburincho of Music was released in theatres back in August, as part of the a double bill with the Kamen Rider Wizard  movie, Kamen Rider Wizard in Magic Land . You'll hear us roar, but we won't be singing all that much Taking place roughly between episodes 20 and ...

Movie REVIEW: Kamen Rider x Super Sentai x Space Sheriff: Super Hero Taisen Z

Image
Despite being hyped up as the crossover film fans had all been waiting for, last year's Super Hero Taisen wasn't actually very good. Sure it perhaps the biggest cast of superheroes ever, but story-wise the battle between Gokai Red and Kamen Rider Decade was a complete mess and offered viewers little more than some colourful eye candy. Still the huge crossover even must have been somewhat of a success as Toei has given them a second outing, throwing the newly revived Metal Heroes franchise into the mix for Kamen Rider x Super Sentai x Space Sheriff: Super Hero Taisen Z . With all of space and the universe now also at threat, let's just hope this outing is significantly better. Surprise protagonist The story begins with the new Gavan (Geki Jumonji) arriving on Earth to destroy all magic on Earth to bring about universal peace, starting with Kamen Riders Wizard and Beast. After seeing Wizard protect innocent lives, Geki begins to question his orders - resulting in h...

Toybox REVIEW: S.H. Figuarts Kyoryu Red

Image
September/October is a pretty good time for Super Sentai  fans, as its usually when the red ranger of the current series finally gets released in S.H. Figuarts form. Following on from Gokai Red and Red Buster from the previous two years, 2013 is the turn of Kiryu Daigo aka "King" aka  Kyoryu Red  - star of Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger . The term "star" seems more relevant than ever as the show seems to practically revolve around him, but that's a discussion for a few month's time when the series review rolls around on this blog. For now, let's just take a look at this super articulated figure of "The Fanged Brave". Before we even get on to the quality of the figure, it's fair to say that Kyoryu Red has some of the best packaging the Figuarts line has to offer. Some may be put off but the extremely busy design, but it certainly captures the spirit and energy of the series perfectly. The window section has the same teeth pattern as ...
