Toybox REVIEW: S.H. Figuarts -Shinkocchou Seihou- Kamen Rider Birth

Image
Release Date: June 2023 RRP:  8800 yen Since the S.H. Figuarts Shinkocchou Seihou line first ventured into the world of Kamen Rider OOO  back in 2019 with Kamen Rider OOO TaToBa Combo ,  Bandai Tamashii Nations have done a great job at getting through the myriad of (interchangeable) forms the titular Rider has. That said one key figure from the series has been notably absent from the range for the past four years, and with the release of S.H. Figuarts -Shinkocchou Seihou- Kamen Rider Birth we can finally welcome OOO' s secondary Rider into the fold. Used by a number of people over the course of the series but primarily Akira Date and later Shintaro Goto , the Birth System was designed by Dr Maki as part of the Kougami Foundation 's Medal System. Following the fate of most secondary Riders these days, Birth was released as a Tamashii web exclusive  item.

Special REVIEW: OOO 10th Kamen Rider Birth: Birth X Secret Birth Story

Image
If there's one thing I think we can all agree on about Kamen Rider OOO 10th: Core Medal of Resurrection it's how underused Kamen Rider Birth was. Despite both Shintaro Gotou  and Akira Date appearing in both the film and a prequel net movie minisode, the characters largely fell to the wayside in the main story. This is even more surprising (or less so depending on how cynical you are about Bandai's toy shilling) considering Birth got a new form in the movie in the form of Birth X . But thankfully the Toei Tokusatsu Fan Club is here to rectify the situation, with the story of OOO's secondary Rider continuing in OOO 10th Kamen Rider Birth: Birth X Secret Birth Story !

Movie REVIEW: Kamen Rider OOO 10th: Core Medal of Resurrection

Image
Tenth anniversary movies have become a big thing for Toei in the past few years, with multiple casts on the Super Sentai side of things returning for their milestone reunion. While it hasn't been quite as regular for Kamen Rider , some series still have plenty of story to be told should the opportunity arise. With Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger receiving a tenth anniversary movie last year, it seems only fitting that this year should be the turn of its Super Hero Time block partner. Kamen Rider OOO 10th: Core Medal of Resurrection brings fans the long awaited conclusion to Kamen Rider OOO 's story - with nearly all of the cast returning to witness Eiji Hino 's reunion with Ankh . Its release was accompanied by two net movie prequels ( The Creation of Birth X and The Resurrected Core Medal ), while the film itself was written by Nobuhiro Mouri and directed by Ryuta Tasaka - both of whom recently worked together on Saber + Zenkaiger: Super Hero Senki . (While I usually try to k...

Toybox REVIEW: S.H. Figuarts -Shinkocchou Seihou- Ankh (Arm)

Image
Release Date: January 2020 RRP: 3960 yen If there's one Kamen Rider series S.H. Figuarts Shinkocchou Seihou looks as though it's going to go all out on, it's Kamen Rider OOO . Much like how Bandai Tamashii Nations previously showed the same dedication to Kamen Rider W , between all the combos already teased OOO looks set to rule the roost for some time. But it's not just the titular Rider taking centre stage, with Bandai also recovering old ground with the S.H. Figuarts Shinkocchou Seihou Ankh (Arm) set. This is the third time the disembodied arm of rogue Greeed has been released – originally appearing as a first-run bonus with the original TaToBa figure before receiving a better quality accessory set version. The new edition takes notes from that second version – releasing in a very similar fashion but with added Shinkocchou Seihou quality.

Toybox REVIEW: S.H. Figuarts -Shinkocchou Seihou- Kamen Rider OOO TaToBa Combo

Image
Release Date: August 2019 RRP: 6600 yen There aren't many S.H. Figuarts out of the 100+ I own that I can honestly say I outright hate, but S.H. Figuarts Kamen Rider OOO TaToBa Combo is definitely one of them. Between the poor ankles, gummy plastic and just general cheapness of the figure it ranks pretty highly as one of my least favourite entries in the line (second only perhaps to the dreaded Kamen Rider ZX ). So imagine my joy when Bandai Tamashii Nations annouced the base form of Kamen Rider OOO's titular Rider would be the next character receive the prestigious S.H. Figuarts –Shinkocchou Seihou- treatment – hot on the heels of Kamen Rider Wizard's equally needed glow-up and the long awaited arrival of Kamen Rider Kiva . But on top of delivering the usual high quality the line usually strives for, S.H. Figuarts –Shinkocchou Seihou- Kamen Rider OOO TaToBa Combo also comes with a few other surprises up its sleeves – teasing more articulation than ever before a...

Movie REVIEW: Kamen Rider Heisei Generations FINAL: Build & Ex-Aid with Legend Riders

Image
It's only a matter of days until the premiere of Kamen Rider Zi-O , the latest Kamen Rider  series that marks both the 20th anniversary and the end of the Heisei Era in the franchise. But when it comes to their movies, Toei perhaps jumped the gun a bit when it came to the last entry in the annual Movie War series. The 2017 crossover between Kamen Rider Build and Kamen Rider Ex-Aid was titled Kamen Rider Heisei Generations FINAL: Build & Ex-Aid with Legend Riders , and as the name suggested also brought along a few older faces. Also returning for this movie (complete with their original actors) are Kamen Rider Ghost , Kamen Rider Gaim , Kamen Rider Fourze and Kamen Rider OOO .

Toybox REVIEW: 66 Action Kamen Riders Wave 5

Image
It's a brand new year for the 66 Action range of candy toys from Bandai , and with the line going from strength to strength with each passing release I can't wait to see what 2015 brings. Despite humble beginnings as simple a range of cheap, poseable Kamen Rider figures it's now extended into a number of other franchises as well as growing a sizeable fanbase. January saw the launch of the 66 Action Ultraman line, and now the Riders return for an impressive fifth wave. This time the selection includes Kamen Rider Drive's Mashin Chaser, Kamen Rider OOO Tajador Combo, Kamen Rider Ryuki and Kamen Rider Black .

Toybox REVIEW: 66 Action Kamen Riders Wave 1

Image
It's always nice when I have a different toy line to review rather than the same five ones over and over again, and this latest candy toy line from Bandai is something I've been looking forward to for a long time now. Dubbed 66 Action  due to their average height of 66mm, this line is dedicated to bringing fans tiny yet poseable figures of their favourite Riders from the Kamen Rider franchise. After a brief delay the first wave finally hit at the end of February, consisting of our first four mini heroes - Kamen Rider Gaim (Orange Arms) , Kamen Rider OOO (TaToBa combo) , Kamen Rider Decade and Kamen Rider 1 .

Toybox REVIEW: Arms Change AC EX Legend Rider Arms

Image
As we reach the end of my planned Kamen Rider Gaim Arms Change  figure purchases, we also reach the reason I decided to check out the line in the first place. Rider/Sentai movies are known for their exclusive power-up forms and mecha, and Gaim 's first movie outing - The Fateful Sengoku Movie Battle , is no exception. However rather than be four brand new fruits, here the core four Gaim  riders draw on the power of the previous four "Neo-Heisei" era Kamen Riders - W , OOO , Fourze  and Wizard . How could the prospect of riders wearing other riders as armour not be exciting?

Toybox REVIEW: S.H. Figuarts Kamen Rider OOO TaToBa combo

Image
It's fair to say I got into the S.H. Figuarts line rather late. This year the Bandai action figure line is celebrating its fifth anniversary, and so considering I only really got into the line around the time Gokai Red was released I have a lot of catching up to do. Luckily Bandai have chosen to make things a little easier but offering a number of reissue Heisei era Kamen Riders over the next few months to coincide with their "Rider on Stage" campaign in celebration of the anniversary. The Kamen Rider OOO TaToBa combo was originally released back in February 2011. With all the colours on OOO's body, it was probably a good call by Bandai to make the box white and use the black/red/yellow/green more sparingly. The white background makes the colours pop a lot more along the sides of the box, and the chest symbol looks great printed on the bottom of the plastic window. The back is a bit plainer, but still keeps the "OOO" circles motif intac...

Series REVIEW: Kamen Rider OOO

Image
When making a television series which makes most of its money from toy sales, what are the first themes that come to mind? Why, greed and desire of course! Ironic as it may seem, this was the core of Kamen Rider OOO , the 21st Kamen Rider series and successor to Kamen Rider W . The 2010-2011 series ran for a total of 48 episodes, and the character was featured in three feature films during its tenure before returning during Fourze's run in Movie Wars Megamax . When medal-based monsters the Greeed awaken from their 800 year slumber, the proceed to wreak havoc on the world by creating monsters named Yummies from humans that spawn from the desires of their hosts and carry them out to create cell medals which the Greeed feed upon. However one Greeed, Ankh's, awakening doesn't go as smoothly and he wakes up as a disembodied arm. He presents a mysterious belt to the happy-go-lucky traveller Eiji Hino, providing him with medals to fight the monsters as Kamen Rider OOO. Bu...
