Movie REVIEW: No.1 Sentai Gozyuger vs Boonboomger

Image
Super Sentai ’s 50th anniversary celebrations may have been somewhat marred by the announcement of its indefinite hiatus, but No.1 Sentai Gozyuger still offered plenty of opportunity to see the franchise out (at least for the time being anyway) in style. First there was the series itself, then the Summer movie , and finally the annual crossover movie to round it all off. No.1 Sentai Gozyuger vs Boonboomger is the 31st and potentially final entry in the long-running VS series , pairing the 50th Super Sentai team up with Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger as well as featuring some familiar faces from previous series. The film was written by Tatsuto Higuchi (who previously wrote episodes for both series) and directed by Shojiro Nakazawa , a veteran of the franchise whose credits go all the way back to Mirai Sentai Timeranger .

Special REVIEW: No.1 Sentai Gozyuger: Polar Beginning

Image
Super Sentai  may be on indefinite hiatus as far as further series are concerned, but that doesn't mean the franchise has completely run out of steam yet. Thanks to platforms like the Toei Tokusatsu Fan Club streaming service that's still plenty of opportunities to tell more stories through the likes of mini-series and one-off specials, with more from No.1 Sentai Gozyuger among the first of its offerings in this "post- Sentai " landscape. No.1 Sentai Gozyuger: Polar Beginning transports us back to the year 2005 and the first Ring Battle, shedding more light on the past of Mashiro Kumade - the first Gozyu Wolf  who would later re-join the battle for the rings as the sixth Gozyuger, Gozyu Polar . Interestingly the one-off special was written by Keiichi Hasagawa ( Ultraman Dyna ,  Ultraman Nexus , Kamen Rider Gotchard ), rather than series head writer Akiko Inoue .

Series REVIEW: No. 1 Sentai Gozyuger

Image
50 years is one hell of a milestone to celebrate anyway, but when it comes to tokusatsu it's a particularly monumental achievement for Super Sentai . Ever since Himitsu Sentai Gorenger first began on April 5th 1975, the franchise has carried on almost non-stop all the way up until now - spawning 49 different mainline series, 50 different teams and hundreds of brightly coloured heroes. But it seems all good things really must come to an end, and after several years of experimentation amidst declining profitability it was decided that the 50th anniversary series would also be its last - at least for the time being anyway. And thus the longest consecutively running tokusatsu franchise bows out with No.1 Sentai Gozyuger , a series which aims to celebrate five decades of Super Sentai spirit in its own unique way. The series written by Akiko Inoue (daughter of tokusatsu legend Toshiki Inoue) in her debut as head writer, with Ryuta Tasaki (a veteran of Super Sentai , but most recently...

Movie REVIEW: No.1 Sentai Gozyuger: Resurrection of Tega Sword

Image
Given the fact that it will also soon be going on indefinite hiatus, one might think that Super Sentai had some extra special planned to celebrate its 50th anniversary. However instead it seems like business as usual for the franchise, with No.1 Sentai Gozyuger 's first movie outing the usual Summer release. But if there's one thing you can be certain with about the 50th Super Sentai team, it's that they'll celebrate things in their own unique way regardless. Released alongside Kamen Rider Gavv the Movie: Invaders of the House of Snacks ,  No.1 Sentai Gozyuger: Resurrection of Tega Sword  was written by series showrunner Akiko Inoue and directed by Ryuta Tasaki .

Toybox REVIEW: S.H. Figuarts Gozyu Wolf (Sentai Ring Limited Edition)

Image
Release Date: October 2025 RRP: 9900 yen The 45th anniversary of Super Sentai saw the franchise make its grand return to the S.H. Figuarts line, and even though Bandai Tamashii Nations  still don't seem confident enough to release full teams at the very least it seems established enough to have become a mainstay. Every red hero from the current series has been released since (with a few sixth rangers and Shinkocchou Seihou figures thrown in for good measure), and this has carried through to the 50th anniversary and No. 1 Sentai Gozyuger . Though a standard retail release, S.H. Figuarts Gozyu Wolf feels particularly special as it's billed as the "Sentai Ring Limited Edition" and includes the aforementioned gimmick item from the series itself. Together with all the rumours circulating about the future of Super Sentai and its transformation into Project R.E.D.   going forwards, there are a lot of reasons to consider this a pretty notable release.

Top 5: Tamashii Nation 2025 Reveals

Image
Bandai' s annual  Tamashii Nation events are always a good time but the 2025 edition felt particularly stacked in regards to reveals, particularly if you're a fan of tokusatsu. While there were a lot of great reveals from the worlds of anime, live-action, video games and Western animation as well ( Star Wars: The Clone Wars S.H. Figuarts has got to be a contender for one of the most unexpected reveals of the weekend), if you are a fan of Kamen Rider , Super Sentai and Ultraman then there was A LOT to salivate over. As always I've picked out my personal favourite reveals from the event, but I have to say it was much tougher to narrow down than usual.

First Impressions: No.1 Sentai Gozyuger

Image
Although both Kamen Rider and Ultraman may have celebrated their 50th anniversaries a few years ago, in terms of overall achievement neither are quite as impressive as Super Sentai finally reaching that milestone. Of the three, it is the only franchise to have run consistently without any significant breaks since the premiere of Himitsu Sentai Gorenger on April 5th 1975. While previously Super Sentai has celebrated its anniversaries by series number rather than year ( Gorenger 's run having spanned across two years), 2025 will now see that change. Despite being the 49th instalment in the franchise, No.1 Sentai Gozyuger slots in rather nicely as the 50th Super Sentai team thanks to the two-team gimmick of Lupinranger vs Patranger . The series is written by Akiko Inoue (daughter of tokusatsu legend Toshiki Inoue ) in her Sentai debut, with veteran Ryuta Tasaki on board as the main director.
