Toybox REVIEW: S.H. Figuarts Spider Kumonos

S.H. Figuarts Spider Kumonos 01

Release Date: February 2026
RRP: 9350 yen

Super Sentai may be on hiatus as far as the show is concerned, but that doesn't mean Bandai still don't have 50 years' worth of shows to make further merchandise from. Since it's grand return to the S.H. Figuarts line back in 2022 Tamashii Nations have put out a select few characters each year, and while it's not quite the same as the full teams they put out previously it's still great to have some representation from Kikai Sentai Zenkaiger all the way up to No.1 Sentai Gozyuger. However the first (and currently only confirmed) Super Sentai release for 2026 doesn't hail from most recent series, and instead makes a return visit to 2023's Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger with S.H. Figuarts Spider Kumonos! The King of the "In-between Land" Bugnarak is a Tamashii web exclusive and the third release from King-Ohger (following on from Kuwagata Ohger and Ohkuwagata Ohger), making it the first series in the relaunched range to receive more than two releases.

S.H. Figuarts Spider Kumonos comes in a box featuring a similar style to that of Kuwagata Ohger, only featuring a windowless front due to its status as a Tamashii Web exclusive (so technically more like Ohkuwagata Ohger really). The box also adopts a white background to match the character's designated colour. Replacing the window section on the front is a nice big image of the figure, with "Spider Kumonos" running across the side and the Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger series logo featured underneath it. Both sides of the box feature the character name yet again, with the Bugnarak Kingdom emblem also featured on the top. One side also has an additional picture of the figure underneath. On the back you'll find more pictures of Spider Kumonos in various poses, and then inside the figure and accessories can be found neatly laid out on a moulded plastic tray. Due to their small size, the Kumonos Keys are attached to a black plastic runner and will need to be cut off before use. Instructions on parts-swapping and accessory use are printed on the inside flaps of the box.

As the sixth ranger of Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger, Spider Kumonos' suit is largely similar to that of the other five Kings but changes up some of the detailing to make it more visually distinct. The suit itself is a gorgeous combination of glossy white and matte black, with metallic gold detailing added across the body which really gives the suit a regal feel. The standard King-Ohger chest plate has been reworked to feature a huge gold spider emblem, the head itself featuring Spider Kumonos' own crest as well as pipelike legs which create the collar - connecting into a padlock at the back. The helmet sports a lavish spider-shaped visor complete four red eyes and front legs which raise up over the helmet. Whereas the five "standard" King-Ohgers each have a cape draped over their left shoulder, Spider Kumonos instead has a jagged tailcoat piece - realised here in soft plastic. As tends to be the case with most sixth rangers simply by merit of them looking slightly different, it's easily the most striking of the King-Ohger suits - the colour palette elevating it just as much as the design itself.

The Kumonos Key Holder on the side of the belt can be removed, and the three Kumonos Keys then clipped onto it for storage when not in use. At least in theory anyway, because if it's anything like my copy then clipping all three keys on feels like an impossible task. Whilst one will clip into the middle without too much hassle, getting the others on either side of it is both extremely fiddly and requires far more force than I felt comfortable with on a tiny piece of plastic. Truth be told I never even managed to get them on, which wasn't the biggest loss because the fit on the middle key was tight enough as it was. Whilst I did manage to get it off again without breaking anything, again it involved applying far more force than it's worth. Given that two out of the three keys are usually inserted into the weapons when in use anyway, ultimately I decided it was more hassle than it was worth despite that extra bit of accuracy it would give the figure.

With Spider Kumonos' suit essentially being a slightly different version of the base King-Ohger suit, it isn't all that surprising to see that Spider Kumonos also shares the same articulation as the previous two King-Ohger Figuarts. Something which is a rather nice offering consisting of;
- Ball jointed head, neck, shoulder pads, waist, torso and wrists
- Swivel hinge shoulders and ankles
- Butterfly joint shoulders
- Double hinge elbows and knees
- "Drop down" ball jointed hips
- Single hinge toe sections
- Bicep and thigh swivels
The shoulder pad pieces are also attached via the usual levered ball joints, with Spider Kumonos featuring a standard one on each shoulder as his suit lacks the shoulder cape. Straight off it's worth noting that, while keeping in mind that every copy of the figure may be slightly different, my copy of Spider Kumonos had some of the tightest joints I've personally seen on an S.H. Figuarts release in years. The shoulders were so tight that they could barely move without squeaking, and the right shoulder pad was so stiff that it wouldn't raise up fully to sit properly parallel with the torso. Thankfully the shoulders are something that can be fixed with a little bit of shock oil to loosen them up, but between this and putting those fiddly little keys on the holder I haven't handled a Figuarts that felt this susceptible to breakage straight out of the box in some time. Putting that aside, generally Spider Kumonos' articulation is very good, and the lack of shoulder cape definitely works to the design's advantage. Naturally the tail coat piece does slightly restrict the legs when it comes to swinging them backwards it's not enough that you really notice it. On a perfect copy with smooth joints running across the whole body, this would be a great figure to pose.

Spider Kumonos' accessories include seven additional hands, the three aforementioned Kumonos Keys (Change, Venomix and Shugod), the Kumonoslayer and the Venomix Shooter. The hands featured alongside the default closed fists are a pair of weapon holding hands, a pair of relaxed open hands, a pair of posed open hands and an additional key-holding left hand. Overall a nice mix that allows the figure to hold all of its accessories and pull off Jeramie's extravagant storyteller poses. The Kumonoslayer is beautifully painted and detailed, featuring moveable spider leg pieces so that it can be displayed in both its inactive and active states. The same attention to detail can also be found on the Venomix Shooter, which featuring a turning (and removeable) key barrel. The keys themselves are moulded in black plastic, but are all shaped accurately and have a dash of paint on the top to tell them apart (gold for Change, purple of Venomix and silver for Shugod). The keys fit into the slots on the weapons firmly, and whilst they are easy to remove there also shouldn't be any risk of them suddenly popping out either. The same goes for putting them into the designated hand, where they fit securely between the thumb and index finger.

S.H. Figuarts Spider Kumonos is a great figure, but a bit of an odd one for me personally. I can't deny that the QC issues around the joints dampened my enthusiasm for the figure at bit, but at the same time I do acknowledge that I was probably just unlucky and it doesn't seem to be a widespread issue. Since it's also fixable for the most part, it isn't that big of a concern either. Regardless between the great sculpt, gorgeous colours and wonderful selection of accessories there's plenty else to like about the figure anyway. The key holder could certainly stand to be a little more user-friendly, but that's the only complaint from a design point of view. It's great to finally see another sixth ranger in the line as well, Twokaizer was beginning to get lonely. While he may currently be the last Super Sentai S.H. Figuarts to be released (and at this rate probably the only one coming out in 2026), here's hoping he won't be the last altogether.
